Arthur Bryant's Sauce (Copycat)

15 mins Serves 8

A copycat recipe for the legendary thin, tangy, and paprika-heavy BBQ sauce from Arthur Bryant's in Kansas City.

Ingredients

Scale: 1x
  • 0.5 cup Cider vinegar
  • 0.5 cup Rice vinegar
  • 0.5 cup Water
  • 0.5 cup Paprika
  • 0.333 cup Yellow mustard
  • 0.25 cup Dark brown sugar, packed
  • 0.125 cup Worcestershire sauce ((2 tablespoons))
  • 2 tablespoons Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Hot sauce ((e.g., Louisiana style))

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients (cider vinegar, rice vinegar, water, paprika, yellow mustard, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, salt, garlic powder, black pepper, hot sauce) in a medium saucepan.
  2. Whisk together until well combined.
  3. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
  4. Reduce heat to low and simmer gently, uncovered, for 10-15 minutes, or until the sauce reaches your desired (thin) consistency and the flavors have melded. The sauce will remain relatively thin.
  5. Let cool before storing.
  6. Store in an airtight container (like a pint jar) in the refrigerator.

Tips

This sauce is intentionally thin and relies heavily on paprika for its character. Use a good quality, fresh paprika. The flavor improves after sitting for a day.
