50 mins
Serves 10
A rich and complex BBQ sauce featuring strong coffee, molasses, chili sauce, and spices. Excellent served alongside brisket.
Ingredients
Scale:
1x
- 1 tablespoon Oil (Vegetable or Canola)
- 2 medium Onions, chopped
- 6 cloves Garlic, finely minced
- 1-2 Jalapeno peppers, stemmed, seeded (optional), and diced
- 1 cup Chili sauce
- 3/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
- 3/4 cup Strong brewed coffee
- 1/2 cup Dark molasses
- 1/4 cup Cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons Brown mustard
- 2 tablespoons Chili powder
- 1 teaspoon Ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon Ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 1/2 cup Water
Instructions
- Heat the oil in a medium saucepan or pot over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onions, minced garlic, and diced jalapenos. Sauté until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add all the remaining ingredients: chili sauce, Worcestershire sauce, coffee, molasses, cider vinegar, brown mustard, chili powder, cumin, ginger, salt, and water.
- Stir well to combine everything.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low.
- Simmer the sauce, uncovered, for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it has thickened slightly and the flavors have melded.
- Serve warm or at room temperature, particularly good with brisket.
Tips
Adjust the number of jalapenos based on your heat preference. The coffee adds depth; use a good strong brew. The sauce will thicken slightly more as it cools.
